Untethered iPad iOS 5.0.1 Jailbreak Step-By-Step Guide

Friday, December 28th 2012. | iPad

The iPhone Dev-Team finally released the updated version of the redsn0w jailbreak tool which can jailbreak iO̵S 5.0.1 on an iPad untethered. Redsn0w actually makes jailbreaking easier than before and it’s available for Mac OS and Windows.

Before going through the process, you should check if your iPad is running on 5.0.1 firmware by going to Settings => General => About => Version. Otherwise, you should go through the process of updating it in iTunes through your computer first.

If everything is setup, follow these steps carefully:

Step 1. You should plug your iPad to the computer and you should TURN IT OFF. Putting your iPad on sleep mode is NOT acceptable for this process.

Step 2. Go to iPhone Dev-Team blog and download the latest redsn0w application and unzip it to your computer. It is available for both Mac OS and Windows, so unless you’re using Linux you will not have problems using redsn0w.

Step 3. When the archive was unzipped, feel free to run the software if you’re ready to start with the untethered jailbreak. Windows users should run it as “Administrator.”

Step 4. Click on the “Jailbreak” button found on the first window that pops up.

Step 5. Now, follow the instructions on redsn0w on how to put your iPad to DFU mode. If things go wrong and iPad is not detected, you can start over the process especially if you have missed a step.

Here’s how you put your iPad into DFU mode:

A. Hold down the Power (corner) button for 0 seconds.

B. Without releasing the Power button, also hold down the Home (bottom center) button for 4 seconds.

C. Without releasing the Home button, release the Power button BUT KEEP holding the Home button for 15 seconds.

Step 6. Redsn0w reboots your iPad once it detects the device is in DFU mode already.

Step 7. Once redsn0w prompts “Please select your options,” you SHOULD check Install Cydia box before clicking Next.

Step 8. After the Step 7, the software will reboot your device automatically while continuing with the jailbreak process. You just have to wait for a short while and jailbreak process is done.

So far, that’s the basic untethered jailbreaking process. You will know if the process was successful when you see the Cydia icon on Home screen. If so, you can run it to browse for jailbreak apps. The first time you run Cydia, it will take a few minutes to initialize…waiting and patience are what you need. Don’t worry, the next time you run it, it loads the same time as the other apps on your iPad.

Basically, jailbreaking your iPad will install Cydia on it so that you can use apps which you couldn’t find in Apple app store. All your settings and apps will be retained after jailbreak so don’t worry about them. However, backing up everything in your iPad before jailbreak process is advisable.
